NOTES
The idea
Turn hand-painted Gujarati letters into a font that really types — conjuncts and marks included. The method: keep the layout rules of an existing open-source Gujarati font and replace only its letter shapes with the painted ones, so correct shaping comes for free.
What it does
- Replaces the outlines of an existing font while keeping its shaping rules
- Aims at about 76 base forms: consonants, vowels, vowel signs, marks and digits
- Traces painted samples into outlines with computer vision
- A coverage tracker lists which letters are still missing, by category
- A style system keeps weight and proportion consistent across hand-made letters
DETAILS
- STAGE
- Tooling works; waiting on the painted letter samples. About 200 two-consonant ligatures are a possible second phase
- BUILT WITH
- Python, fontTools, OpenCV
